BUILDING UP TO THE SELL-OUT DECATHLON COVENTRY’S HALF MARATHON – BE PART OF THE DAY!
With less than a week to go until Decathlon Coventry’s Half Marathon on Sunday 28th February 2016, more than 5,000 runners will be starting to feel the nerves, anticipation and above all excitement expected ahead of race day. The popular Midlands race will be started by local Olympian Dave Long, alongside Zoë Bear and Michael McCann from local charity partner Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice.
Race Starters Dave and Michael have both run for the Decathlon Coventry’s Half Marathon’s chosen running club of the year, Massey Ferguson Runners Club. Dave Long, former long-distance runner for Great Britain has previously completed the event in 1 hour 1 minute and 17 seconds!
Dave Long says: “As a local guy it’s an honour to be asked to start Decathlon Coventry’s Half Marathon, in fact the event was the very first road race I ever competed in as a fun-runner. The fact that I eventually competed in two Olympic Marathons for Great Britain goes to show that anything can happen if you’re not careful!”
Jamie Warren, Head of Marketing at GO2, said: “We are delighted to have Dave, Mick and Zoë Bear starting the race this year. The event has proved extremely popular, with standard entries selling out much faster than we could have anticipated. All of our inspirational runners need your support on the day, so we are encouraging everyone to come out, take to their doorsteps and cheer as spectators play a big role in creating the race day atmosphere!
“The community feel and support for the Decathlon Coventry’s Half Marathon increases year on year, as members of the community come together, supporting, cheering and making sure runners cross the finish line in style! From elite runners, right through to all those fantastic fundraisers who have taken this epic challenge to do something amazing for a good cause, everyone feeds off the support of the spectators. It really makes a massive difference to everyone taking part!”
Councillor Abdul Khan, Deputy Leader, Coventry Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Events added:
“I’m really looking forward to seeing the city’s streets full of runners this weekend and I’m sure as ever members of the public will come out and show their support to them on the day. I wish everyone all the best on Sunday whether that’s running for a chosen charity, for fun and fitness or to beat their own personal best.”
The popular event boasts a completely closed-road route throughout the entire course, and will see competitors start at 9.00am on Hales Street in the city centre. The route takes runners through Coventry city centre, the beautiful surrounding countryside, and finishes with a welcomed downhill stretch. The race provides the perfect course profile for runners to find a good rhythm and really get into their stride, the route also encourages lots of support as spectators line the streets to cheer on friends, family and all their city’s runners!
The event is supported by Coventry City Council as part of its events strategy to attract events that combine and link sporting activity with engaging the public in sport and help the city attract high profile sporting events.
