Return of ‘Hillzmas’ set to bring festive fun to local community

A community group in Coventry is helping to bring some Christmas cheer to the community of Hillfields, thanks to funding from a local housing association and university.   Tuesday (16 December) will see the return of ‘Hillzmas’, a free event aimed at bringing the community together for some festive fun.   The event has been funded by Whitefriars Housing and Neighbourhood University, a project run by Coventry Uni which strives to raise the aspirations and skills of those in the city by engaging with them and inviting them to use the University facilities.   It has been organised by WATCH, (Working Actively To Change Hillfields), a community lead organisation which aims to improve the lives of those living in the area.   It will be free to attend and will be open from 3pm to 6pm. Families are encouraged to come down to the Hillfields village square and get in the Christmas spirit.   There will be hot food and drink, music from pupils at St Mary and St Benedict Primary School and presenters from the WATCH-run Hills FM radio will also be on hand to entertain the guests.   Every child will receive a Christmas gift to take away with them, and will be given the chance to go for a ride around the square on hand-decorated bikes.   Catherine Collis, assistant director at Whitefriars, said: “We’re really excited to be hosting this event. It helps to bring the community together and kick-starts the Christmas season.   “Christmas can be a difficult time of year for people, with pressures to spend money that they often don’t have. This event is a great way of having fun with the family without breaking the bank.”   Trisha Evans from WATCH, added: “We’ve had a great relationship with Whitefriars and Neighbourhood University over the years, and it’s fantastic that through our partnership, we can bring events such as this to the community.   “We welcome anyone who wants to have some great Christmas fun to come down and join us.”
